WHAT IS DEEP PHILOSOPHY?

Deep Philosophy means philosophizing (doing philosophy) in a contemplative, personal, and self-transformative way. In Deep Philosophy we contemplate from our inner depth on fundamental issues of life, in togetherness with companions.

Several elements in this definition are especially important:

First, Deep Philosophy is a way to PHILOSOPHIZE. Like all philosophers throughout history, in Deep Philosophy we explore fundamental issues of life and reality, using the powers of the mind to develop networks of understandings.

Second, Deep Philosophy is CONTEMPLATIVE. We philosophize not just from our intellect, not just from our analytic thinking, but from our INNER DEPTH.

Third, Deep Philosophy is PERSONAL, not because it deals with our personal problems, but because it touches us deeply and inspires in us new understandings and self-understandings.

Fourth, Deep Philosophy is TRANSFORMATIONAL, because it awakens in us new dimensions of our being, and in this way changes us.

Fifth, in Deep Philosophy we contemplate IN TOGETHERNESS with our companions and with a philosophical text. Instead of talking “about” ideas, instead of judging and analyzing, we RESONATE with ideas.

COMMON ACTIVITIES OF DEEP PHILOSOPHY

We usually practice Deep Philosophy in small groups of participants who contemplate in togetherness on a short philosophical text. The text serves as a starting point for the personal journey, as providing direction and focus, and as a source of enriching material to work with.
A smaller group of 3-4 participants is called the A PHILOSOPHICAL TRIO /QUARTET. A larger group of 5-15 participants is called a PHILOSOPHICAL COMPANIONSHIP. Both of these activities can be conducted either online (usually on skype) or in face-to-face meetings. In addition, Deep Philosophy can also be practiced by an individual who contemplates privately.

SOME CENTRAL CONCEPTS OF PHILOSOPHICAL COMPANIONSHIPS

Depth – We contemplate because we treasure profound ideas and profound understandings in togetherness. We cherish the profound, just as in music we cherish the beautiful, and in cooking we cherish the tasty. Profoundness is, so to speak, the “beauty” or “tastefulness” of philosophical contemplation.

Togetherness - Participants see themselves as sharing a common endeavor, as participants in the same reflection, instead of asserting themselves as isolated individuals with separate goals. They do not argue with each other, or analyze each other, or assert themselves over others, but rather compliment and enrich each other’s reflection. Each individual is therefore concerned with what is happening to the others, and to the group as a whole.

Resonating Companions resonate with each other’s ideas just as jazz musicians improvise together with their different instruments, responding to each other, giving space to each other, and creating together a rich symphony of ideas. They do not put themselves in opposition to others (or to the text), they do not express themselves in isolation from others (or from the text), they do not even examine each other from the outside. Rather, they develop a symphony of understandings together, responding to each other, elaborating on each other, continuing each other, like different instruments in the orchestra.

Contemplative reading Reflecting on a text while putting aside our opinions and intellectual thinking, and “listening” to the ideas that arise within us. Such ideas can arise in response to specific words in the text, or the words of fellow contemplators, or sometimes spontaneously. When contemplation is full, it is experienced as if my deeper self speaks within me.

    THE DEEP PHILOSOPHY GROUP

Our Deep Philosophy Group is an international group of philosophical practitioners who are committed to practicing and developing Deep Philosophy, using a variety of techniques. The group was founded at the end of a philosophical retreat near Torino, Italy, in September of 2017. Full members include Kirill Rezvushkin (Russia), Michele Zese (Italy), Ran Lahav (USA/Israel), Sebastian Drobny (Austria/Germany), and Stefania Giordano (Italy). Additional participants from several countries are now doing their training in several languages. Many others around the world have participated in activities given by group-members. The group is open for others to join us after sufficient training.
